Thailand has abundant solar radiation resources, especially in the northeastern and central regions. The highest regional annual average radiation is 1200-1400KWh/m2, of which the radiation is high in April and low in December.
Thailand's previously formulated "The Alternative Energy Development Plan 2015" aims to reach 6GW of photovoltaic installed capacity by 2036. It was previously reported that the target is expected to be raised to 17GW.
According to a report released by IRENA, Thailand's photovoltaic installed capacity in 2016 was 2.753GW. According to IEA data, as of November 2017, the cumulative installed capacity of photovoltaics in Thailand was only 2.692GW. According to the data obtained by the New Energy Intelligence Bureau at the Thai Ministry of Energy, the IEA data is more in line with the official Thai announcement.
According to the IRENA report, the Thai PV market is dominated by SPPs and VSPPs. The potential of rooftop PV has yet to be exploited on a large scale. Because rooftop PV lacks attractive incentives other than self-consumption. According to the IEA report, at the end of 2017, Thailand has completed the evaluation of the rooftop photovoltaic self-consumption pilot project, and the evaluation results will improve the future development of rooftop photovoltaic policies.
